Watch These Men Fly in An Amazing VideoPosted: January 9, 2009 | |
Man has always had the urge to fly.
In Greek mythology, Icarus, along with his father of Daedalus, attempted to escape exile in Crete by using wings made of wax and feathers to fly. Despite warnings from his father, Icarus flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, and he plunged into the sea. to his death.
Air balloons, zeppelins, the Wright brothers and the space program — all came in the wake of Icarus and epitomized man’s overwhelming desire to push the envelope and take flight.
A year or so ago, I witnessed dozens of power gliders jump from Brace Mountain in Dutchess County, New York right, and soar into the sky. These magnificent men in their flying machines filled the October sky as they floated thousands of feet above terra firma.
Now, in an absolutely astonishing video, we see men jumping off tall cliffs in Norway. No, they are not tumbling to their deaths.
The real amazing thing is that these bird-like men wear wing suits to fly through the air with the greatest of ease at near terminal velocity before parachuting to the ground.
A physicist could explain this much better, but terminal velocity occurs when the downward force of gravity equals the upward force of drag, causing the net force on an object to be zero.
But don’t take my word for it — watch the video. You’ll be amazed.
